A few weeks ago I went to an improv comedy show with my friend Alana, and afterwards we stopped at a little Irish pub in downtown LA for a bite. We were very intrigued by the listing of ‘avocado fries’ on the menu, and ordered it to give it a go. Well, it was about as crazy tasty as you’d imagine, so I knew I had to get to recipe testing at home to see if I could recreate them. After a few different attempts and methods, I came up with this little number. Since the fries themselves are very rich because of all the avocado goodness, I decided to make a tangy, bright, and herbal dip to go along with them. For this I used the winning combination of lemon and cilantro, along with one of my favorite condiments, mayonnaise. Yes, I know mayonnaise is hit or miss for some folks, but I’m kind of obsessed with it, so if it’s not your jam feel free to substitute it for extra virgin olive oil and make yourself a little aioli mixture. Enjoy it, friends!
Avocado Fries with Cilantro Lemon Dipping Sauce
Ingredients
Avocado Fries
- 1 and 1/3 cup plain bread crumbs
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon flake kosher sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 ripe but firm avocados
- Canola oil for frying
- 2 eggs beaten
Cilantro Lemon Dipping Sauce
- 2/3 cup mayonnaise (regular or vegan)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro
- 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon lemon zest
Instructions
Cilantro Lemon Dipping Sauce
-
Place the mayonnaise, cilantro, lemon juice, and zest in a blender and mix until smooth and creamy in texture. Transfer to a small bowl, cover, and keep refrigerated until serving.
Avocado Fries
-
In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the bread crumbs, garlic powder, salt, cumin, and black pepper. Set it aside. Cut the avocados in half and then slice them vertically into 4 inch by 1 inch wedges. Set them aside. Heat the vegetable oil to 335 degrees Fahrenheit in a large frying pan, adding enough oil so that the oil is about 3 to four inches deep, but leaving at least 3 inches between the top of the oil and the top of the pan.
-
Dredge the avocado slices in the breadcrumb mixture, then in the egg mixture, then in the breadcrumb mixture again. Place them in the hot oil and fry them for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown, flipping them over about halfway through. Remove them with a slotted spoon or tongs, and set them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb the excess oil. Allow them to dry for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a serving tray and serve them immediately with the Cilantro Lemon Dipping Sauce.

Wow those avocado fries look SO tasty!!! I'm pretty sure I could eat the whole batch 🙂
Thanks everyone 🙂
I cannot wait to try those tasty morsels. They look heavenly!!!
This is the first I've heard of avocado fries and I think it's genius. Such a fun recipe and a pretty color. Very nice!
Delicious! I have never heard of avocado fries but I'm certainly going to give them a try. Thanks for your visit and brining me to you tasty blog.
Best,
Bonnie
WOW! I've never heard of avocado fries! Great, take something healthy and delicious then fry it and make it more delicious yet unhealthy? I'm in!
Mmm this looks delicious! I've actually been planning to make something similar.
I would have a really hard time restraining myself from eating all of these!
WHat a good idea! I am knocking my head because it has never dawned on me – but looking at them – I can just imagine the outside crunch and that inside creamy green. And you found the best day in the world to create these!
omg this is such a great idea!!! healthy.. well kind of and I'm going to try it this weekend!
I've always wondered if you could do an avocado-fry. I've had avocados in egg rolls before and the result has been simply astonishing – this one looks equally so!
Thanks all! The crunchy outside and creamy inside really is quite excellent 😀 Goes great with guinness too 😉
I have a feeling I would love these, especially with that cilantro lemon dipping sauce!
I think I just got updated from "cameo" to "series regular".
These were so good! I can't wait to try making yours.
Avocado fries? Never heard of something like this before. But it looks real good!
I'm no fan of eating avocado on its own but deep fried sounds so appealing! I'll have to try these when i get my hands on some good avocado.
I love fried avocado! That looks amazing! Yum.
I love avocado anyways…but deep-fry it? Now you're talking!
These look killer, I am reposting as well and making them this weekend woo hoo! thanks!
@Kathy: Seriously, the dipping sauce is awesome. I use it with chunky regular pub fries too.
@Alana: Haha, you betcha you have!
I always have these every year at the fair. I never thought about making my own. It'd be a lot cheaper too since they charge so much at the fair and I wouldn't have to wait once a year to eat these.
Wow! I just ate 1/2 an avocado and now I'm wishing it were fried 🙂 They remind me of what's in the "Mighty Cones" I had in Austin, which I'm determined to re-create. Such beautiful photos, too!
Sues
@kirbie: Definitely do it, one avocado makes a surprisingly large amount of fries, and they're so rich you get full pretty fast.
@wearenotmartha: Just googled "Mighty Cones in Austin" and saw the chicken avocado one. OMG. I've wanted to visit Austin badly before because of the great music scene, but this has pushed me over the edge.
I think I would be in heaven too tasting these! What a wonderful idea and good for you for recreating them. I can't wait to try them myself.
This has to be the craziest fried food ever – it makes deep fried mars bars sound logical! Having said that, the smooth creaminess of the avocado, with the crisp crumb? I'm drooling just imagining it! I wonder if they'd work with a spicy dip as well?
@souperior: They definitely would. When I had them at the pub they served them with a chipotle mayo dip that was FANTASTIC. It had just the right amount of spice and creaminess 🙂
Great recipe and idea of making fritters of avaocado. I have never tried this but am sure must be an utter delight.
What a very nice and creative recipe this is! I am really impressed. I hope I can try some this weekend. It will be really great.
Thank you both 🙂
I love avocados. I love fries. This has to be a hit.
I cannot wait to try these- I seriously need a 12 step program for avocados- I love them. This sounds like an amazing way to indulge!
I never thought of frying avocados, but why not? They look so cute and green under the crust! Great idea – thanks! I am going to vote for it on Stumble upon.
now this is 1st time I ma reading that you can make fries from avocado Very innovative. They look delicious and the colour of the sauce is os vibrant.
Thankyou for dropping by simply.food.Your visit and comments are very much appreciated. You have awonderful space with superb clicks. Following your blog.
I was so intrigued about frying avocados that I got down to making them yesterday. Didn't have lemon pepper so used regular ones, but my, these were pretty amazing. The taste of fried avocado is rather unique and still has a hint of freshness, and the dressing is superb! Excellent recipe!
Thanks all! 🙂
@Gourmantine: So happy you enjoyed them!! They really are quite fun to eat, especially with that cool lemony dip 🙂
These look amazingly delicious!
Yum! And the sauce sounds delicious too! I just found your blog through Foodista…looks like you have a lot of great recipes! 🙂

I've never even heard of such a thing as avocado fries, but wow, does that look delicious. You can put avocados on just about anything and I'll eat it, but fried? with that sauce? sounds heavenly.

Delicious! I linked back to this post on my blog.
Just made these, but used crushed pork skins instead of bread crumbs to make them low carb. They were AMAZING. Can't wait to make them for friends. Probably will used a tad more lemon pepper next time. Thank you tons for the idea! As an experiment, mashed the avocado and made an avocado cake too, it was great.
So glad it worked out for you 🙂 Adding crushed pork skins sounds delicious, what a great idea! I'll have to try that the next time I make them.
This is beyond lovely.
Posted to my facebook twitter and google+ account. This sounds sooooo delicious 😀
Thank you both!
Looks amazing!
Just made these as my contribution for dinner last night… AMAZING! Definitely a new crowd pleaser.
I just tried these and made them as an appetizer for an afternoon playdate and not only did all the parents gobble them up but so did all the kids! a bunch of 2 yr olds eating whole avocado! unreal!! thank u 🙂
I am going to attempt these this weekend for a Mexican BBQ on my friends roof deck!
I tried theses and love them and the dipping sauce is yummy…thanks for this…gonna do this one again
So happy to hear that they turned out well for you guys! 😀
Looks Yummy! Have you tried a stuffed avacado? A ball of heaven. Avacado, cheese and chicken or beef coated and deep fried!!! Yummy!!
Oh my goodness, that sounds amazing!!! I've never heard of that, but I must try it sometime!
Is there anyway to substitute the lemon pepper? I made them yesterday and they turned out okay without it, but they kind of missed a little touch and they don't have that here in Spain. Thanks for the recipe though, I amazed my friends with it!
You can make lemon pepper by combining equal parts black pepper, garlic powder, and dried (or fresh) lemon zest.
Fantastic recipe! I have posted it on my community foodie blog. Hopefully you'll have the chance to come and check it out http://www.facebook.com/thefrenchiefoodie
C
you are a genius. bookmarking, saving, sharing, loving…
why are some of the ingredients repeated twice?
1 Teaspoon Lemon Pepper
1/2 Teaspoon salt
1 Teaspoon Lemon Pepper
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
I don't know, that is strange, Blogger blip? It doesn't show that they are repeated twice in the normal editing window, but in the html editing window it shows that they are. Bizarre….
Please be careful never to deep fry (an inch or more of oil) in a non-stick frying pan!!! The recipe doesn't specify, but you should use a heavy skillet, like a cast iron one, for anything more than light pan frying. I learned the hard way a few years back- nearly burned down the kitchen frying fish! The non-stick lining separated after just a few minutes of frying, and then the oil caught fire…everything turned out fine, but that lesson in seared in my memory lol!
Sarah
Wowzers! That's good to know, I had no idea that the non-stick lining could separate like that! I think I will have to stick to good ol' stainless steel pans after hearing that story, especially when I'm heating up oils.
This is the most genius idea. Ever.
I saw your post on Pinterest. It looks so good, and since our family loves avocados, I think they will be a big hit!
I am going to make thses for a cocktail party I am hosting this holiday season. The recipe says to dip them in the bread crumb mixture and then the egg mixture, but the instructions don't indicate what is in the egg mixture (just the breadcrumb mixture) Can you let me know what the egg mixture entails?
Thanks
It's just beaten eggs 🙂
I can't get over how delicious these look. Avocados are in my top five for favorite foods. I can't wait to try this recipe out! Thanks for sharing!!
@Victoria: Awesome, hope you enjoy them 😀
How long would you bake these for if trying to opt out of frying?…
I am not quite sure, I've never baked them before, but to be safe I would follow the steps up until frying and bake them in an oven preheated to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, but peek at them every 5 minutes and then take them out once they have the nice golden brown coloring (like in the photo) and the breadcrumbs are crispy on the outside when you poke them. If I were to make an educated guess I would say maybe 15 to 20 minutes? But still check on them every 5 minutes up until and past then if they're not done, just to make sure they don't accidentally get burnt. Also make sure to use a large baking sheet and spread the fries out on it so that they are not stacked up on top of one another to ensure that they bake more evenly. Let me know how long it ends up taking to bake them, I would very much like to know 🙂
Thank you Eva! I will probably try them tomorrow night, I'll be sure to let you know! Thanks again for the tips 😉
No problem! Best of luck!
How did the baking work? That is what I wanted to do for a lower fat version? Has anyone tried baking them?
I've heard that avocados can get bitter when cooked, so baking them that long might not turn out so well. Just a warning.
I am definitely frying these… probably in some coconut oil. Oh, my.
I made these tonight for the first time. I actually baked them though & they were quite good. I can't say I was overly impressed though. I really thought I was going to be completely blown away because I love avocados so much, but I wasn't. : /. Also, they were kinda frustrating to make & took a lot more time than I thought. By the end, I ended up sprinkling flour on the ones that were left on the cutting board, pouring the egg on them & then pouring the crumbs over them. Dipping each one in everything just took so long. It couldn't felt longer because my husband & I were starving though. Ha. But overall, they were good. Now, the sauce I really didn't do well on. I'm usually pretty good in the kitchen. I love to experiment & would consider myself a pretty good cook. The sauce though, well it didn't turn out like the picture from the recipe. I put everything in the blender but it just threw everything along the side of the blend, didn't chop the cilantro or mix anything together. Any help on ante way to get it to blend like the pic shows?
Chopping the cilantro first probably would've helped. Also blending longer makes it smoother, and if it doesn't seem to be coalescing you can pause it and run a rubber spatula down the sides to make sure everything is close to the blades, and then blend again.
I kept pushing everything back to the blades but the second it turned on, it just threw everything to the sides of the blender. The blades never touched any of it the second it was turned on. I thought that maybe it would help if I made a larger quantity?
I did keep pushing everything back to & on the blades but the second I turned it on, it just threw everything to the sides of the blender. The blades never touched any of the ingredients once it was turned on. I thought that maybe it would help if I made a larger quantity?
Melissa,
I made the recipe as-is and it was great. My girlfriend loves avocados too and loved this. Sounds like you modified it. Baking it… why…would… you…ever? Why would I bake anything that I can fry?!?!? Lol. Also, you mentioned flour…there is no flour in this recipe. Now, cut it out and quit trying to make a deep-fried piece of fruit into something healthy, ha.
I do agree with you on one point – the dredging was taking me much longer than expected, and just with one avocado I ran out of egg (after using 2 eggs).
I loved this recipe though. It has a savory taste with a very very subtle sweetness… and fried goodness that can only be gotten from +300 degrees sizzling OIL.
Yes, maybe it was just too tiny an amount to stay at the bottom. I have a magic bullet that I use for blending small amounts of things so maybe a device like that would help to blend it better.
Repinning…these look awesome!
I just made something sort of like this with sweet potato sticks that I turned into "french toast" sticks. I love avocados and this is a great idea!
Made this. Love it. Get the oil temperature right! One big avocado made more than enough for two people, so I halved this recipe – though I ran out of egg. I used panko bread crumbs but I'd recommend maybe putting them in the food processor to get them finer. It came out good anyhow though. Love the dip. I substituted a lime for the lemon … I'm surpised that you went with lemon – as lime and avacado go together so well.
I've become a health junkie over the last year and this is one of those non guilty treats. Thank you for posting!!!
oh wow. just made these and i am pretty sure i just died and went to heaven. very very good.
I have had deep-fried avocado halves and they were just too much, but this way they look good. Going to try them this evening.
AMAZIIIIIIIIIIING
Do you think I could use a substitute for the mayo? I'm not a big fan of it, but the dipping sauce sounds fabulous. Do you think sour cream or yogurt would work, or would it alter the taste too much?
Sour cream would probably work great, since avocados and sour cream get paired in a lot of other dishes, like layered dips and burritos 🙂
I did it with sour cream tonight because i ran out of mayo yest and it was super yummy! and a little bit lighter than the mayo would be
We like Daisy low fat sour cream and have also been using greek plain yogurt to sub for mayo and sour cream.
O…M….G! These sound too good!!! I am going to try these Avocado fries this weekend. Thanks for sharing:D
I've made these twice and love them more and more! Sharing your link on my blog: http://www.voyage-on.blogspot.com!
I am in heaven only starring on it and reading your mouthwatering discription! This is unbeleavable! Of course I have to try this! I am keen of avocado and cilandro! Wow!
thank you Sophie from

I love avocados~ I did try this at home, But wasn't too kneen on it> I don't know Y!! I love to cook , but this "Good for you" item wasn't that appealing (to me) my personal opinion. I'll try again with this dipping sauce . I didn't use this aforementioned recipe, but did season the avocado and I used the eggs and breadcrumbs???!!!!
Will try again :))
I made these today and they were okay. I baked them instead of frying but they turned out the same. Despite the seasoned bread crumbs the avocado tasted just.. kind of bland. However I didn't have them with the cilantro dip, so maybe that's why. However I did have them with tzatziki and that added a ton of flavour!
If you like these then you will love the Avacado Eggrolls from the Cheesecake Factory!!!
Thanks so much for this recipe, I made them along with some taquitos and spanish rice, they were the perfect side dish.
Such a genius idea! I love avocados and fried? Wow!!! i wold love to put some parmesan into the coating!
O M G.
I'm making these today. I love avocados sooooooo much! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Raawwr, not brains but look delicious aaaawrrrg… aaahhhhhhh never heard of fried avocado GRRRAWRRR BRAINSSS …I WILL EAT ALL THE AVOCADOS!!! rawrrggurgle ZOMBIE LIKE AVOCADO! recipe GOOOOD! rrrRRRAWR! MORE BRAINS RECIPES! ZOMBIE FOODIES INSIST!
Ummm, is there a possible substitute for the Cilantro Lemon sauce? I'm allergic to cilantro, and because of that, it tastes like I'm eating soap. I love avocadoes, and I'm dying to try these!
You could substitute it with some other fresh herb you like, perhaps fresh parsley or basil?
Possible to bake the fries in the oven instead of frying them to cut down on calories?
Yes, some other people have tried that in the comments above. I haven't tried making them that way though so I am not sure what temperature you would want to bake them at or for how long. If I were to estimate I would say bake them in an oven preheated to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, but peek at them every 5 minutes and then take them out once they have the nice golden brown coloring (like in the photo) and the breadcrumbs are crispy on the outside when you poke them.
I want eat it right now! So going to try it!

Let me know how you like it if you do:) Thanks Lisiane!
I am totally trying this! Avocados are my thing!!!
Did this & it is yummy. It's good cold as well as hot.
Avocado fries sound a little weird to me but looking at it makes me want to visit the grocery store now. I am an avid fan of avocados so I will absolutely make these wedges tonight. I’ve always gone through various avocado salads but never have I heard of breaded and fried avocado strips. Anyhow, I will give it a shot. Thanks a lot for sharing!
It looks yummy…Thanks for sharing…..
Any substitute ideas for the eggs? I want to do a vegan version…
Hi Erin! You could brush them with a bit of olive oil to help the bread crumbs stick to the slices 🙂
Maybe with onion dip, they taste delicious too!
.You have made this perfectly..Will surely give it a try..Thanks a lot for this recipe. it tastes yummy too!
