avocado, fries, dip, sauce, fried, deep, cilantro

A few weeks ago I went to an improv comedy show with my friend Alana, and afterwards we stopped at a little Irish pub in downtown LA for a bite. We were very intrigued by the listing of ‘avocado fries’ on the menu, and ordered it to give it a go. Well, it was about as crazy tasty as you’d imagine, so I knew I had to get to recipe testing at home to see if I could recreate them. After a few different attempts and methods, I came up with this little number. Since the fries themselves are very rich because of all the avocado goodness, I decided to make a tangy, bright, and herbal dip to go along with them. For this I used the winning combination of lemon and cilantro, along with one of my favorite condiments, mayonnaise. Yes, I know mayonnaise is hit or miss for some folks, but I’m kind of obsessed with it, so if it’s not your jam feel free to substitute it for extra virgin olive oil and make yourself a little aioli mixture. Enjoy it, friends!

Avocado Fries with Cilantro Lemon Dipping Sauce

Course Appetizer
Servings 4 people

Ingredients

Avocado Fries

  • 1 and 1/3 cup plain bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon lemon pepper seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon flake kosher sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin
  • 2 avocados
  • Canola oil for frying
  • 2 eggs beaten

Cilantro Lemon Dipping Sauce

  • 5 tablespoons real mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • Cilantro Lemon Dipping Sauce

Instructions

Cilantro Lemon Dipping Sauce

  1. Place the mayonnaise, cilantro, and lemon juice in a blender and mix until smooth and creamy in texture. Transfer to a small bowl, cover, and keep refrigerated until serving.

Avocado Fries

  1. In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the bread crumbs, lemon pepper, salt and cumin. Set it aside. Cut the avocados in half and then slice them vertically into 4 inch by 1 inch wedges. Set them aside. Heat the vegetable oil to 335 degrees Fahrenheit in a large frying pan, adding enough oil so that the oil is about 3 to four inches deep, but leaving at least 3 inches between the top of the oil and the top of the pan.
  2. Dredge the avocado slices in the breadcrumb mixture, then in the egg mixture, then in the breadcrumb mixture again. Place them in the hot oil and fry them for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown, flipping them over about halfway through. Remove them with a slotted spoon or tongs, and set them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb the excess oil. Allow them to dry for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a serving tray and serve them immediately with the Cilantro Lemon Dipping Sauce.
