Over the years I’ve slowly began to make more gifts myself than I purchase ready made. I love that I can put thought into what that person likes and customize the gift for the recipient, whether it’s via scents like my homemade bath salts and body oils, or through flavors, like this sumptuous holiday spice coffee blend. It’s made with love and intention, and I think that imbues the gift with a little something special that I hope the intended feels whenever they partake in it. That, and I love dressing it up with little bows and twine and cuttings from the forest for a festive seasonal wrapping.

Homemade Holiday Spice Coffee BlendThis coffee blend is very easy to make, and also customizable depending on your spice preferences. I have whole spices in the recipe below, that are ground along with the coffee beans in a coffee grinder. If you do not have a coffee grinder, you can use a ground version of the spice, or use a spice grinder to grind the whole spices on their own and then incorporate them into already ground coffee beans. Some of the spices called for in the recipe are already ground (like cinnamon and nutmeg), because their whole counterpart doesn’t feasibly fit in a coffee grinder.

This mix of star anise, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, and coffee is one for the ages. Comforting, aromatic, cozy, warming, and perfect for a winter pick-me-up. I hope you enjoy this little homemade gift, whether it’s shared with others or made as a gift for yourself this winter season. Stay cozy, dear reader!

  • 4 star anise
  • 2 teaspoons whole cloves

  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Snap apart the arms of the star anise into smaller pieces (otherwise they will likely not fit down the funnel in your coffee grinder.) Distribute between resealable glass jars for storage or gifting. Makes about 12 ounces of coffee grounds.
